Tet Holiday

Hi! We are Minh Ngoc, Minh Anh Hoang and Anh Phuong from 9D2.
In Viet Nam we have a tradtional holidy called Tet. We would like to share some facts about it.
First, Tet is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with their beloved family members.

In the past, Tet was essential as it provided one of few long breaks during the agricultural year, which was held between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the next ones.

Tet is like a combination of Christmas and New Year: every family will get together to have big meals, decorate Tet trees and eat Tet food but to welcome the new year instead of a religious cause.

Tet is celebrated by Cleaning their homes, polishing every utensil, or even repaint and decorate the house with kumquat tree, branches of peach blossom( cherry blossom), and many other colorful flowers.

Children, buy new clothes and shoes to wear on the first days of New Year.
Gifts are exchanged between family members and friends and relatives, while children receive lucky money kept in red envelope. (people believe color red brings fortune)

Vietnamese also use many kinds of flowers and plants to decorate their house in this special period.

There are 2 kinds of plants in Tet holidays: Blossom flowers, apricot flowers.

Cherry blossom.

We usually have flowers market before Tet.

We also have many traditional food.

Banh Chung - Chung cake

It is wrapped with a special leave called " Lá Dong".
It made out of sticky rice, pork, green beans.

"Nem" - Spring roll

You can eat it with a dipping sauce  and rice noodles.

Ingredients: mushroom, carrot, shrimp, chopped meat/seafood and other vegetables.

"Giò" - made with grounded poultry, fish sauce and other ingredients.

Wrapped with "lá chuối" then boiled in water and there are many kinds of "giò".

We hope one day you will have the chance to visit us in Viet Nam and enjoy Tet holiday.

Call us maybe xx

  1. Hey friends! Tet Holiday looks really interesting! How long do you celebrate it for? Our names are Taylor Davis, Morgan Davis, and Ashley Williams. One of our holidays that we celebrate is called the Fourth of July. The reason that we celebrate on the fourth of July is because we gained our independence on that day in 1776 from Great Britain. On this day, we watch parades, we grill hot dogs and hamburgers, and we watch fireworks together. Everyone wears red, white, and blue, the colors on our flag. Also on this day, we honor the soldiers that are fighting and have fought for our country and our freedom. Do you guys have any holidays like that? What is your favorite holiday? We can't wait to hear what you guys have to say!
    See ya,
    your friends from Michigan

  2. Hi! Your holidays are so fascinating! Our names are Hannah Laing, Enjeune Williams, Morgan Stanczuk, and Casey Quigley. Though some of our holidays are as traditional at Tet Holiday, we also have many "Hallmark Holidays." A Hallmark Holiday is a holiday geared towards selling products. Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday, where we celebrate love and give gifts to loved ones. Do you have any similar holidays? We were also wondering what your everyday lives are like? For example, Hannah's parents are both teachers and school plays an important role in her life. She additionally is often busy with school work, martial arts, and reading. Enjeune has a really busy life. She wakes up at 5:45 and doesn't come home until 7:30 on the average day. During those long days she does school wok, basketball, track and picks up her siblings. For Morgan, she has all older siblings who are like extra parents who mandate what she does, but she is very close with them and loves them a lot. Also she is a dancer and has danced since she was three through three different dance studios and is apart of the school dance team. Casey is in all honors classes and is taking Spanish, which she hopes to become fluent in. After school, she is on crew for the high school's musical Bye Bye Birdy. She also loves to watch Grey's Anatomy. Hannah and Enjeune love that show as well. We are all so excited to be in contact with you and hope that we learn more about each other and each other's cultures. Talk to you soon!
    From,
    Hannah, Enjeune, Morgan, and Casey

  3. Minh Anh and I also love to watch Grey's anatomy as well. Our favorite characters are Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang and Lexie Grey although she died in season 8 but we love her adorable relationship with Dr Sloan.
